mstsfence is a Windows utility developed by martona that adjusts how the built-in Remote Desktop client (mstsc.exe) behaves in full-screen mode. By default, a full-screen remote session occupies the entire monitor, hiding the host machine's taskbar and often introducing scaling or letterboxing when the remote resolution does not match the display. mstsfence constrains the full-screen session to the monitor's work area instead, so the host taskbar remains visible—typically the host taskbar at the bottom of the screen and the session taskbar at the top—and the remote desktop renders at a 1:1 pixel ratio with no scaling artifacts. The software operates through a small tray controller that installs a global hook, which the operating system maps into mstsc however the client is launched, whether from an .rdp file, a jump list, or the Start menu; outside of mstsc the hook performs no action. Inside the Remote Desktop client, it clamps the monitor-geometry APIs that mstsc reads to the work-area dimensions, and it tracks DPI and resolution changes live so the sizing remains correct as display conditions change. Optional features include a dark-mode pass and a host display-scaling (DPI) override. Because the tool works with the stock Microsoft client rather than replacing it, users retain all of mstsc's native credential user experience, Credential Manager integration, and certificate and consent dialogs.
